INDEX: This troubleshooting guide will aid in determining the nature and severity of any 800 series microscope malfunction. This procedure is followed after build, repair, or service to evaluate the functional status of the instrument. It is the final check to ensure the instrument operates as designed and covers all mechanical motion and illumination. Check all functions and follow through all procedures, regardless of the reported problem. As the functional check is performed, record any remarks or results. These checks and remedies will assist you in solving relatively minor problems, minimizing critical downtime and saving the expense of a service call. If, after completing the recommended diagnostics the problem persists, call the Medlink USA Service Department (800-762-7921) for assistance. Be near the microscope when calling so that any additional information can be tried immediately. Figure 1 provides an overview of the microscope assemblies. Power Check Verify that the power cord is plugged into a wall outlet. Check that the foot switches are connected to the power supply. Looking at the back cover on the Horizontal Arm, the center and right connections are for the foot switches. A or B can be plugged in either spot. Turn on the power switch. Refer to Figure 2. The green pilot lamp should light. If not:
Illuminations Systems Check Verify that the Light Intensity control (Refer to Figure 2) varies the lamp brightness, and that the brightness plateaus at a dial setting higher than 4. This verifies the lamp driver adjustment. If the fiber optic light source (Refer to Figure 3) fails to light:
1. Using a hand switch or foot switch, initiate an X-Y motion. As it moves, vary the speed control. The X-Y should slow down and speed up. Leave speed control on high for the remainder of the procedure. 2. Using a hand switch or foot switch, initiate a Fine Focus motion. As the focus moves, vary the speed control. The Focus should slow down and speed up. Leave speed control on high for the remainder of the procedure. 3. Using a hand switch or foot switch, initiate a Zoom motion. As it moves, vary the speed control. The Zoom should slow down and speed up. Leave speed control on high for the remainder of the procedure. Fine Focus Check Using a hand switch or foot switch, initiate a motion on the Fine Focus control. Run the focus to the end of travel. You should hear the motor stop promptly as the limit switch clicks. If the microscope head fails to move up or down and the motor cannot be heard:
If the microscope head fails to move up or down and the motor can be heard, contact the Service Department for assistance. Press Focus Center on the Control Panel. The carriage should return to center. Nudge it off center in the same direction again, but only for a second. Press Center again. It should return to center. Repeat this procedure in the other direction. Check that the fine focus works on all controls, as well. The left control should move the carriage up, and the right control should move the carriage down. Repeat for the B-side controls. Zoom Check (A-Side) Using a hand switch or foot switch, run a zoom and watch the zoom ring rotate. The ring should move evenly, and not catch anywhere. At the end of travel, the motor should slow down audibly, but not stop or click. Run zoom to the other end of travel, and look for the same results. If it stops before end of travel, it must be readjusted by a trained technician in order to regain full range. Verify that the zoom control of each A-side hand switch and foot switch operates the A zoom. Verify that the left zoom control moves the ring to a higher number (zoom in). Verify that the right zoom control moves the ring to a lower number (zoom out). Repeat for the B-side controls.
Zoom Check (B-Side) Repeat the Zoom Check (A-Side) procedure with Head B (Refer to Figure 5). X-Y Check During this procedure, take care that X-Y rotation does not stretch the cables and fiber optics. Look at the carrier end of the Swivel Arm, with the lamp module on the far end. Verify that A hand switch is plugged in to the lower left outlet on the Swivel Arm outlet plate. Verify that the B hand switch is plugged in to the lower right outlet on the Swivel Arm outlet plate. Using a hand switch or foot switch, initiate a motion on the X-Y control. Run the X-Y to the end of travel. You should hear the motor stop promptly as the limit switch clicks. Press X-Y Center on the Control Panel. The carriage should return to center. Nudge it off center in the same direction again, but only for a second. Press Center again. It should return to center. Repeat this procedure in the other direction. Repeat this procedure with each axis of the X-Y.
If either X or Y function fails to operate and no motor noise is heard,
If either X or Y function fails to operate and motor noise is heard, there is a mechanical failure in the system. Because of the complicated nature of the X-Y, it is best at this point to contact the Service Department and report your findings. Focusing the Microscope
NOTE: If the user has to wear glasses to correct an astigmatism, it is suggested that they operate the microscope while wearing their glasses and using the high point eyepieces. Return to the highest point of magnification and refocus micorscope if necessary. Due to the delicate nature of the microscope body itself, there are relatively few adjustments that can be performed in the field. Extreme care should be used when transporting this equipment, as the microscope is a delicate instrument. Motorized Column Check With either column control, raise column until it stops. It should stop before top of column tube becomes visible below shroud. Run column down until it stops again. Motor should stop cleanly and be able to go back up easily from the lower limit. If a rattling or squeaking sound is heard, run the column up and down to the limits 5 times to spread the grease. If this does not solve the problem, column needs to be rebuilt by a trained technician. Use the other column control briefly to verify that it works. If the column does not move:
